Cleaning Guide Tips

Always follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before using our guide.

NO single spot cleaner is appropriate for all fibers and spots. The wrong spotting agent can turn a cleanable spot into a permanent stain. This guide will give you the best chance of success with the least risk of permanent damage.

Treat spots and spills immediately. First, using a dull-edged tablespoon, spatula or knife, remove any solid or semi-solid residue materials. Then blot with clean white towels – first dry and then dampened with plain water – until blotting no longer achieves results. If discoloration remains, carefully do the following:

• Pretest any solution listed on the Cleaning Solutions guide. Choosing an area that is not normally visible, apply a small amount of the solution to a white towel and dab onto the test area. Allow 20 minutes for the fibers to absorb the solution, then, gently rub with a clean dry part of the towel. Check the towel for transfer and the fibers for color changes or fiber damage (fuzzing, wrinkling, loss of finish, etc.). If any of these conditions exist, stop and contact a cleaning professional.

• Clean by following the prescribed sequence shown on the table in this guide. Use small amounts of solution on a barely dampened white cloth. Blot – don’t rub. Work from the outer edge toward the center. Do not over wet, which may cause a drying ring at the edge of your work. Continue applying each solution until that solution no longer causes transfer from the spot to the towel, then, move on to the next solution. In any sequence where water is listed as the final step, it is intended to rinse out the previous solutions. Always rinse whenever indicated.

• Be patient. Some spots respond slowly. Avoid the temptation to rub or to get the spot more than just damp.

• Dry the area thoroughly. If you have a wet vacuum, use it to extract as much moisture as you can. Then circulate air over the area with a (hair) blow dryer set for cool air.

Due to variations in fiber blending, dyes, construction, types of finish, composition of the stain and length of time the stain has remained in the fiber, some spills and spots simply cannot be removed. Others can only be removed with professional treatment. If you have questions about removing a spot or spill, the professionals at Lloyd’s Fibercare, Inc. will be glad to help.
